The color show peaks first in the high country, late September at places like Dolly Sods and Canaan Valley, then sweeps through the gorges in mid October, right on time for Bridge Day, the one day each year when the New River Gorge Bridge opens to pedestrians and BASE jumpers leap 876 feet toward the river.
The rest of the year has real cases too. Summer is whitewater and swimming-hole season with mountain temperatures a notch cooler than the surrounding lowlands, spring runs the rivers high and wild for experienced paddlers, and winter turns Snowshoe Mountain and Canaan Valley into the mid-Atlantic's snow pocket, catching lake-effect powder the coastal states never see. West Virginia remains one of the cheapest, least crowded outdoor destinations in the East; the tradeoff is winding two-lane roads that make every map estimate optimistic. Summer
The mountain refuge. Valley towns run warm and humid near 85F (29C), but the plateau and high country stay cooler, and the New River's commercial rafting, Summersville Lake swimming, and gorge climbing shade-hop through the season. Afternoon thunderstorms are the daily wildcard.
Fall
The headline season. Gauley releases from early September into mid October, high-country color starting late September, gorge color and Bridge Day in mid October, and stable crisp air throughout. Lodging around Fayetteville books out for Gauley weekends and Bridge Day; plan early.
Winter
Quiet and snowy up high. Snowshoe and Canaan Valley catch real powder December through March while the rest of the state goes gray and dormant, with many gorge outfitters closed. Come for skiing or resort coziness at the Greenbrier; otherwise wait for spring.
